Neck Finish Sanding Part 1

This stage of finish
sanding precedes fretting,
and is done with medium
fine
abrasive. The small
number of pictures here
belies the time and
attention given at this
stage to removing scratches
from previous sanding
and achieving the correct
neck, heel and headstock
profiles -
this heel has
had its end, sides and
base sanded
![]()
Three heels with all their
curves blended in whilst
keeping their forms nice
and crisp

Three headstock backs,
again with all curves blended
whilst keeping things
crisp and sharp - much
effort goes into the finish
on the end grain
across the top edge and
in the recessed 'ears'
of the headstock

Three neck backs all done.
It's as much about
touch
at this stage as it is
about what you can see -
the neck is constantly
felt, and the profile
finely adjusted with abrasive
sheet, until the neck
is just right for
playing

The finished neck viewed
along its edge. Next
stage is fretting,
followed by yet more
finish sanding with very
fine abrasive sheet ...
