The body edges are first
sanded with medium coarse
abrasive sheet round a
dowel for the negative
curves and a flat block
for the
positive curves![]()
A mahogany body with
part-sanded edges![]()
The sanding continues
with medium grade abrasive
sheet ...![]()
... and then medium fine -
still a few scratches
to
sand out here![]()
The next job is to sand
the back and front of
the body with medium
coarse abrasive sheet on
a block to remove the marks
from
previous machine
sanding, seen here![]()

The front and back are then
sanded with medium fine
abrasive
sheet on a block
until an even scratch-free
finish is achieved![]()
The body edge radius is
formed by first sanding a
narrow bevel around
the edge![]()
Here's the bevel around
the base of the neck
pocket
![]()
The bevel is then rounded
over by sanding gently
in
line with grain
and over the edge onto
the side - ash is a
challenge as it's all
too
easy to sand unwanted
valleys and ridges in
to the hard and soft
grain
of the wood![]()
The body is finish-sanded
with fine abrasive sheet
on a
hard foam block,
under a bright side-light to
make any scratches more
visible - the aim is to
achieve a beautiful satin
sheen which will take
the sealer and
lacquer
coats well![]()
Mmm ... mahogany! Now
we're ready to drill some
very important holes
